Most likely Amazon.com, apparently.
A little while back you might have heard the news that Sony had snagged a temporary exclusive for the new Ghostbusters game in Australia and Europe. Now exclusives aren’t such a big deal, they’re part of the ever-lasting console war, but what struck most people as being such a dick move on Sony’s behalf was that it was announced so close to the game’s release. And even then, not in all regions. Petty, would probably be the word that most people could use to describe it.
Well it looks like either Atari is feeling a little guilty about it (or Microsoft believes that one jerk move deserves another) as it’s been announced that the 360 version of Ghostbusters, which is to be released in the US this week, will published region free. What this means, essentially, is that any EU or AU Xbox gamers who still wanted to play the game with the rest of the Playstation world, all you’ll need to do is import the game from the US. So as long as your TV has no problems running PAL-60 (and woe betide the gamer who’s TV doesn’t anyway), it’s the perfect sidestep around a platform exclusive deal.
If enough people do import, we’ll probably end up seeing copies in the pre-owned sections of our game stores and eBay too.
Speaking of woe betide: this game may also have lost all interest for shut out gamers by the time the exclusive wall drops “later this year”. Anyone who was mad-keen to play it will be importing, so a sizeable chunk of the game’s audience will have already paid their money to Atari’s US distributors. It’s another blow to the economy folks, time for another stimulus package!
