Relic re-releases original Homeworld

The graphics may be dated, but the single player is brilliant

I’ve obviosuly caught this announcement a little late, but better late than never!

I wouldn’t have thought it had been so long, but apparently September this year marked the ten year anniversary of Relic Games’ revolutionary RTS title Homeworld.  Ye gods I feel like an old bastard now, I used to play this over a LAN with mates back when I was in high school.

Homeworld was the first truly three dimensional real-time strategy, and it followed the journey undertaken by the last remaining humans to rediscover their ancient home planet.  It was also one of the very few games that managed to crack me emotionally when I was younger, and had some fantastic storytelling elements.

Mark, of course, enjoys playing it’s successor Homeworld 2, but there is a great deal of charm to this title that has survived even as it’s graphics have become more and more obsolete.

To celebrate it’s 10th anniversary, Relic has released the complete game for download.  This is a great chance for any of you who never played the original to see what all the fuss was about.  The idea of a three dimensional real-time strategy is something no-one would bat an eyelid at these days, but at the time this was truly ground-breaking stuff.

Also, it’s free!  What further excuse do you need?

Take a look at the announcement over on Relicnews.  If you’re a fan of the game, you may very well be interested to read over a Q&A with Homeworld’s senior artist and principal designer.
